Accreditation
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) through the joint sponsorship of The MetroHealth System and the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.  The MetroHealth System is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The MetroHealth System designates this educational activity for a maximum of  6.0 category 1 credit(s) towards the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.  Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.

Objectives

  • Describe what is known about the genetic basis of heart failure and list gaps in knowledge for which further investigation is needed.
  • To review new developments in anti-platelet therapy and how they relate to PCI.
  • To discuss the anti-inflammatory properties of antiplatelet therapy in ACS patients.
  • Describe the natural history of patent foramen ovale in patients with and without a history of stroke.
  • Recommend optimal management for patients with a patent foramen ovale.
  • Summarize the most recent insights from the AFFIRM study.
  • Describe the challenges that still remain in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
  • Define the indications for chronic anticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation.
  • Describe the anticoagulation options available and contrast their risks and benefits.
  • Summarize the outcome of recent ablative therapies in atrial fibrillation.
  • List current recommendations for ablation in patients with atrial fibrillation.
  • Describe the role of the ACC.
  • Interpret recent political developments and describe how cardiologists can best interact with their political representatives.
  • Describe the natural history of pulmonary hypertension.
  • List current therapies available for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
  • Outline several kinds of congenital heart disease that are frequently encountered by adult cardiologists.
  • Describe key points for the successful management of adults with congenital heart disease.
  • Review the cardiovascular risks of participation in sports.
  • List key components of the cardiovascular evaluation of young athletes.
